The Fallser Club and Solutionary Coaching present the Second event in our Solutionary Living Series.
A Solutionary ( coined by Zoe Weil) is someone who makes decisions and life choices by considering what would do the most good and the least harm for themselves, other people, animals, and the environment.
Join us in celebrating the joys of local produce and the pleasure of growing your own food. There is an incredible satisfaction in being able to eat something you have grown yourself. You can start small with potted plants, have a plot share in a local community garden, or volunteer to help a local farmer. Amanda Staples will be on hand to talk about what it means to grow organic food to nourish people. We will discuss container gardening, raised beds, vermiculture, seed-saving, and much more. Experienced gardeners will be on hand to answer your gardening questions. Carefully tended and lovingly cared for plants will be for sale.
Amanda Staples and Germantown Kitchen Garden
We are a half-acre farm and nursery in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, selling our organically grown vegetables and herbs, fruit and flowers, perennials and shrubs to neighbors, chefs, and local farm and garden enthusiasts. We support other local farms by offering their organically grown produce at our market.
Our Saturday Morning Farm Stand offers you the chance to mingle with neighbors and see what’s new in the garden while you select from the freshest, highest-quality produce Philadelphia and the surrounding area has to offer. Fresh herbs, berries, and flowers will brighten your already colorful bounty, and our nursery plants will help you make your yard an oasis for birds, bees and butterflies. Our baker friends round out the selection with fresh-from-the-oven sourdough breads and treats. Many Hands Coffee Roasters serves up espresso drinks in the back, where you can sit and enjoy the morning.
We grow our own seedlings, and we can grow yours, too. Each spring, we offer a wide array of spring and summer veggie and herb seedlings, in addition to our flowering perennials and woody ornamentals, to complete your home garden.

Backyard Eats
Mike Bennett is Owner & Operations Manager of Backyard Eats.
Mike Bennett graduated from Widener University with a degree in Finance. During a 6-month tour with his band, Apple Juice Jones, Mike had a revelation. In Willow Creek, California he spent a magical night with his band and a generous family that served homemade wine with goat cheese, tomatoes, and crispy onions – all from the family’s small farm. It was in front of the glowing fire that he realized he wanted to be a part of the profound transformation that food can bring to one’s health, community, and regard for Mother Nature.
In February 2020, Mike brought his construction and customer service experience from the home foundation and drainage industry to Backyard Eats. Now, Mike shares his passion for the magic of homegrown food with our gardening clients! You can often see him meeting clients for a consultation, or recording one of our personalized garden proposals.
In his free time Mike is a bassist, singer, songwriter, manager, and producer for his band, Apple Juice Jones. He also enjoys practicing yoga and golf.
At Backyard Eats, we know that you want to be connected to nature, food, and your community. Becoming a confident gardener will help you achieve all of those goals. The only problem? There’s a lot of information to know and understand: enough to make anyone feel frustrated and overwhelmed.
We believe that growing food at home should be easy.
We’ve experienced firsthand the transformative power of homegrown food, which is why we’ve developed garden design, installation, and maintenance services proven to be successful in over 500 gardens.
Here’s how we do it in three simple steps: 1) In-Person Consultation, 2) Design and Build, 3) Learn and Grow. When you’re ready to get started, book a consultation!
In the meantime, sign up for our newsletter to stay connected with the magic of homegrown food. So you can avoid another year of irrigation and indecision, and build confidence and connection instead!
Grace Wicks
Grace Wicks will be our MC for the evening.
A professional gardener, Grace founded Graceful Gardens in 2008 with the goal of coaching city dwellers how to grow food in their urban habitat. Over the course of 12 years, the company grew into Center City’s premiere urban gardening company with 10 full time employees and over 200 clients in the city. Grace worked with restaurants and chefs in the city to create kitchen gardens on the roof of restaurants and in private residences.
Grace retired Graceful Gardens at the end of 2019. After recovering from a serious illness, Grace is now developing a gardening practice in the Chestnut Hill area of Philadelphia. Grace volunteers for the Philadelphia Orchard Project and the Philadelphia Goat Project on native and edible landscapes. She and her mother, Judy Wicks, are creating a “homestead” that models eco-friendly practices that enhance self-reliance, such as roof-top solar, water conservation, composting, lawn-to-meadow native habitat development, and production of organic vegetables, fruit and nut trees, and medicinal plants. Additionally the property is used as a venue for community building events and celebrations.

Ashana Larsen
Life coach and Executive Director of The Fallser Club, Ashana Larsen, has been eating more of her lawn each year. She practices vermiculture (worms!) and concentrates on cultivating rich soil. When the soil is good, the vegetables grow themselves. She makes up for not knowing what she is doing with nonstop enthusiasm and has been able to grow an impressive number of things that she proudly adds to her dinner table.
