Jason McGovern

Philly’s The Describers explore the dichotomy and absurdity of trying to pull yourself together as the world falls apart in their new album “No Worlds.”

To Jason McGovern, founder and leader of The Describers, the album is as much a reckoning with personal “new worlds” as it is about “no worlds.”

“Over the past few years, I’ve been in this weird place where I’m actually opening up myself to myself and to things that might bring some real contentment,” said McGovern. “All that while it feels like society, the earth itself and maybe even the idea of a shared reality are coming undone.”

“No Worlds” was largely recorded and mixed by McGovern in his home studio, Eel Diner Jukebox, though he also did significant work at Retro City Studios in Philadelphia and Kawari Sound in Wyncote, PA, with Matty Muir.

McGovern has been releasing music and performing as and with The Describers since 2018. He also collaborates with other artists in the Philadelphia area representing a wide range of styles, most recently playing keyboards for The Tisburys. He also served as co-producer for their 2025 record “A Still Life Revisited.”

“No Worlds” is available to stream and download now.

Bright Kelly

Blessed with a gritty voice and cursed (?) with an angry face, Bright has never been much good with social cues. You don’t have to guess what he’s thinking — ask him, and he’ll tell you in blunt terms.

His music works like that, too. It’s at once startlingly honest and thrillingly oblique. You get the immediate sense that this man’s mind is wired a little differently, and that his voice—throaty and husky, prodigiously loud when he needs it to be—is there to span the distance. To make you understand.

As frontman of The Great Enough, he’s been the herald and standard bearer of lush, dance-and-shout-inducing alternative rock anthems. In his solo work, he is a little more introspective, a little more relaxed, and a little more comfortable with blemishes.

His music has been compared to—or drawn fans of—Hozier, Gang of Youths, Counting Crows, The Avett Brothers, The Head and the Heart, and Elliott Smith.
