Jill Salkin

Jill Salkin is a Philadelphia-based singer and songwriter, who has released three CDs. Her songwriting is a reflection of her influences from artists as different as James Taylor and Steely Dan. Jill’s vocal stylings have been influenced by artists such as Patti Austin, Anita Baker, Bonnie Raitt, and iconic jazz singers such as Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan.

Jill’s performing experience covers decades of singing in clubs in Philadelphia, New York, Wilmington, and Southern New Jersey. She performed in Atlantic City casinos, and was a background singer for some showroom headliners there. Her warm stage presence add to her artistic interpretations of jazz, blues, pop groove, and original songs.

What the World Needs Now, Jill’s last CD, was rereleased last year, with tracks being played on many stations around the country, and on the internet. Her music can also be heard on Pandora. At this time, Jill received a glowing review for this album in Jazz Weekly. Over many years, her music has been played on her hometown radio stations, WRTI and WXPN.

Jill is delighted to be returning to the Fallser Club, joined by a trio of the area’s finest musicians: Aaron Graves (k), Chico Huff (b), and Doug Hirlinger (d).

Settlement Jazz Collective

The Settlement Jazz Collective is a rotating group of dedicated amateur musicians who met as students in the Adult Jazz Program at the Settlement Music School.  The Collective presents classic American jazz standards as well as the prolific Blue Note period of the 1950s into the 1960s.  Latin jazz is also an area of great interest for the Collective.

For the June 27th Fallser Club performance, the Settlement Jazz Collective will consist of Tawana
Williams on keyboard, Kevin Penfield on vibes, and Ken Morlino on bass.

Pianist Tawana Williams originally played trumpet in middle school and high school and developed a fascination with piano during high school.  This journey led her to studying jazz at Rutgers University and William Paterson University.  After spending ten years teaching middle school, Tawana returned to music and joined the Settlement Music School.

Vibist Kevin Penfield is a retired chemist from Wilmington, Delaware. He played drums and mallet percussion through high school and college, including studying marimba with Mike Rosen at the Oberlin Conservatory. In 2024, after a 46-year break, Kevin picked up his mallets again to join one of the adult jazz ensembles at the Wynnefield branch of the Settlement Music School.

Bassist Ken Morlino started his musical journey early with piano lessons as a child.  Ken resumed his jazz journey with lessons and the study of jazz piano at the Nashville Jazz Workshop in the early 2000s.  After a hiatus for graduate school, Ken resumed his jazz studies on the bass in 2016, and now plays both bass and guitar and has performed in a variety of ensembles since 2017.  Ken is also a volunteer guitar and bass instructor for Guitars for Vets, a national nonprofit organization supporting veterans who wish to learn beginning guitar or bass.
