Sex. Gender. Religion. Why are they so hard to talk about? What do they have in common?
A multi-award winning documentary called Angels and Saints-Eros and Awe has some of those answers.
Come join us for a viewing of the award-winning documentary film, followed by a panel discussion led by producers Rodney Whittenberg and Vic Compher, and will include Rev Bill Marchhiony and Rev Kari Olson.
Those who shared their perspective in the film on the topic of eros and spirituality include leading clergy, sex educators and therapists, and workshop leaders all around the gender and sexuality matrix. Each of these “messengers of wholeness” brings to the screen their heartfelt and sometimes hard-earned wisdom. That is why we call them our “Angels and Saints”.
The film has met with rave reviews as it has been screened at various faith communities, professional conferences, seminaries, and for the general public.
It addresses the psychic pain and damage that traditional institutional religions and American culture have for so many years inflicted by teaching that “the Spirit is good” but the “body is evil”. A recent example of this deep-seated cultural brokenness which often includes sexual/ institutional control in our society is the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe V. Wade, thereby taking away a woman’s right to control her body and future or make her own personal health care decisions. The ‘Don’t say Gay’ bill in Florida and the appalling attacks on trans people, as well as the idea of criminalizing drag events, speak volumes about why this film is timely. We also celebrate the Respect for Marriage Act, which overrides to a degree certain traditional biases and controls of sexual and interracial relationships. With DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) top of mind for a lot of people, the message in the film couldn’t be more timely.
This is an ideal film for people in the sex-positive community, the LGBTQ+ community, sex, gender, and consent educators, spiritual teachers, clergy and medical professionals, DEI consultants, as well as the general public.
